More efficient port supply chains in Victoria

The Victorian Government’s release of a discussion paper last week as part of its current review into Victorian port arrangements articulates key challenges facing Victorian ports today. The industry is largely fragmented mostly as a result of economic reforms adopted in Victoria in the late 1990s. Despite the success of the reforms, this fragmentation threatens to create increasingly significant challenges for delivering port and maritime services as efficiently as possible given the growth the sector is experiencing. The discussion paper also asks some fundamental questions about the critical role of government in driving efficiency in a largely privatised port system.
